This month, the children in school-age 2 participated in a creative apple art experience that provided many opportunities for learning, exploration, and self-expression. The children began by tracing and cutting out their own apple shapes, using scissors carefully and showing concentration as they followed the lines. They then used small pieces of colourful paper and glue sticks to decorate their apples in their own unique ways. Some children created rainbow-coloured apples, while others experimented with different patterns, shapes, and colour combinations. Some children used their imagination to transform their apples into people by adding faces, arms, and legs using the small pieces of paper. One child proudly explained, “My apple is a human being,” showing how the children were using imaginative thinking to give meaning to their creations.
This activity supported physical development, particularly fine-motor skills, as the children traced, cut, picked up small paper pieces, and used glue sticks. It supported cognitive development as the children made decisions about colours, patterns, shapes, and how to arrange the materials, while also using problem-solving skills to bring their ideas to life. The activity encouraged language and communication development as the children talked about their designs, shared their ideas, explained their creations, and listened to their peers. It also supported social-emotional development by encouraging confidence, independence, patience, and respect for different ideas and creative choices. Most importantly, the experience provided an opportunity for creative and imaginative development, allowing each child to express their individuality and turn a simple apple shape into something meaningful and personal. It was wonderful to see the children proudly sharing their finished creations and celebrating the different ideas and designs of their friends.
