September marks the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in our toddler room. As we welcome a new group of toddlers, we are taking the time to slow down, get to know one another, and build a sense of belonging within our new classroom community.
These first weeks are filled with little moments that help children feel safe, connected, and confident in their new environment. Through cuddles, smiles, shared laughter, songs, and play, we are beginning to form meaningful relationships with one another and create a classroom
where every child feels welcomed and valued. These caring interactions help children build trust with their educators and feel secure in their new surroundings. When toddlers feel safe and connected, they are more comfortable exploring, trying new things, and expressing their needs and feelings.
Our toddlers have been busy discovering their new surroundings through hands-on exploration. From dancing with peers, to touching and exploring bright sunflowers, each experience gives children opportunities to wonder, investigate, and express themselves. Exploring the sunflowers allows the children to use their senses as they notice the colour, texture, shape, and smell. These simple experiences encourage curiosity and help children learn about the world around them. Dancing with peers also gives children opportunities to move their bodies, practice coordination, build confidence, and enjoy being part of a group.
They have been getting creative with paint, enjoying the freedom of exploring in the sandbox, and using their little hands to squish, shape, and create with play dough. These activities provide opportunities for sensory exploration, creativity, and self-expression. Painting allows children to explore colours, textures, and different ways of making marks while encouraging them to express their ideas freely. Sandbox play gives children the opportunity to scoop, pour, dig, and fill, supporting their fine motor skills and early problem-solving abilities. Play dough is also a wonderful way to strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers while encouraging creativity, imagination, and concentration.
We know that learning happens through play, but for toddlers, it also happens through relationships. Every shared experience, gentle interaction, and moment of curiosity helps build trust and connection. As the children play alongside one another, they are beginning to learn important social skills such as sharing space, taking turns, watching and learning from their peers, and communicating their wants and needs. These everyday moments support their emotional development and help them begin to build friendships and confidence within the group.
Reading books together creates opportunities to slow down, share a cozy moment, and discover new stories and ideas. Books also help support language development as children listen to new words, look at pictures, make sounds, and begin to connect words with familiar objects and experiences. Reading together also encourages children to sit with their peers, listen, participate, and develop an early love for books and storytelling.
Family pictures are a great way to create connection as it helps children feel a sense of comfort and belonging seeing familiar faces and people who are important to them. Having pictures of family members in our classroom can provide comfort throughout the day, especially during moments when children may be missing home. It also gives us opportunities to talk about the people they love, recognize familiar faces, and make connections between their home and classroom experiences.
September is just the beginning of our journey together. We look forward to watching these little relationships grow, friendships develop, confidence blossom, and our classroom community become a place where everyone feels they belong.
